Confusion over future building projects

New research shows widespread confusion among education workers over where to access information for future building projects.

Figures from the Building Schools Exhibition and Conference (BSEC) reveal 66 per cent of people working in education feel confused, misled and have found it difficult to get the information they need to plan building and refurbishment projects, since the Building Schools for the Future Project was scrapped last year.

The two day conference, taking place at London's Excel, brings together architects, suppliers, IT specialists and teachers, to discuss school buildings and design.

The Government's plans for free schools pepper the conference agenda. Key topics for discussion included building new free schools, new procurement and funding models, maximising space to support the curriculum, improving existing stock and adapting existing space to create quality spaces for learning.

"We're clearly moving away from a model in which schools can only be in particular types of dedicated school buildings," said free school founder Toby Young. "This Government at least, is keen to allow more providers to enter the tax-payer funded sector."

As well as attending keynote speeches and open discussions, visitors were able to visit a fully equipped classroom featuring the latest products and technology.

IT and education specialist Professor Stephen Heppell said: "BSEC's the pivitol place for learning about new learning. It's a place that's full of a proper understanding of the new technologies, the new equipment, the new world of learning."
