The public finances are in a bad state. In 2009/2010, the deficit hit a record £155bn, meaning the government spent significantly more than it earned. Big cuts have been planned to reduce it, with the full scale of the cuts announced on 20 October 2010.

This secondary classroom resource is designed for Year 7, 8 and 9 citizenship lessons. It can be used as part of the accompanying lesson plan, created for Teachers TV, which includes activities and extension tasks based on this topic.

The lesson plan looks at group activities of calculating and prioritising spending, when faced with a limited budget.
