Summary
For really effective and fun lesson-planning ideas, see these Key Stage 1/2 geography activities that are quick and easy to replicate when teaching about overseas locations.
Pupils partner up to play Bingo against other pairs. Each pair has two cards with locations written at the top: one local and one overseas. Images from home and abroad have to be sorted onto the correct card. Some of the images are ambiguous and primary children often mistakenly place the wrong photograph onto the wrong card, giving teachers a great chance to explore and combat stereotypes with their pupils.
Later, KS1/KS2 pupils play a game with dice. The dice are covered in images of overseas locations and photographs of the local area. By using guided questions, the children investigate how much they can glean from the photos.
