The programmes are set aboard the cruise ship the SS Mathematical. In every programme the crew encounters new challenges that can only be overcome by finding out about a new area of maths, gaining new maths skills, or learning how to put their maths know-how into practice.

The world of the SS Mathematical is presented in 3D model animation, but the programme also features comments and help from Matthew Lyons. There is plenty of music, with songs to help with the "rote learning" of maths in an enjoyable way. The songs often feature animation or real-life locations exploring situations that children will find familiar and relevant.
